Well, for those who don't know we have had a rough week. Jax ended up getting the flu and we had to take him to the doctor where we found he also has a double ear infection. He was continuing to get sick and couldn't hold fluids down. We were worried he was going to become dehydrated. We took him back in on Thursday afternoon where the doctor said that if he couldn't nurse well and wasn't going to take a bottle with pedialyte, at least, we'd have to take him to the ER for fluids. :(
We came home from the doctor, he still wouldn't nurse well, and I was starting to feel sickly. I ended up getting the flu with gross outcomes that I will spare you with...
But long story short, Corey had to take Jax to the ER Thursday night since I couldn't nurse him and he wasn't wanting to eat from his sick momma.
They were in the ER for about 4 hours where they tried to give him a bottle and hook him up to an IV. It took 4 different nurses (2 pediatric IV specialists) to finally get him an IV and he never took a bottle. Come 6:30 a.m. and I'm finally feeling like I will live again and can get out of bed. Thankfully, I hitch a ride with our wonderful neighbor and I get a wheelchair ride up to the Peds ICU. I see my baby hooked up to monitors and a sleep- deprived Corey worried sick.
Jax was napping finally but still would not take a bottle. If this is any indication of his character, we are going to have a very strong willed boy. He wanted to hold out for the "good stuff" :) I was running a low grade fever still, wearing a face mask, but knew I needed to nurse him. Corey, running on 1 hour of sleep was taking care of Jax and making sure I drank enough fluids and eat some saltines to be able to feed Jax. I felt so much pressure because if I couldn't produce milk then I couldn't help my son feel better.
Finally, around noon we got the okay from the doctor for me to feed him and he gobbled it down like it was Christmas dinner. My mom and dad arrived a few minutes later to a happier Jax but a crying Julia.
I fed him one more time before I went home with my parents where they let me sleep while they cleaned our house donning masks and gloves. (Believe me, it was gross).
Jax and Corey came home from the hospital later that afternoon and we could tell he was much happier but exhausted and hungry. However, later that night Corey woke me up because he now had the flu bug and we switched beds and roles.
My parents ended up staying till today (which is Dad's birthday!) helping tremendously. Corey is up and we are all tired, but eating now and using less lysol.
For those of you who are coming for Thanksgiving...don't worry. We will be deep cleaning again. We joked there will be many more of these experiences and probably with more children in the future. This is the first of many flu bugs but certainly will not be the last.
